Summit - Bradbury Mtn

I hiked Bradbury Mtn in Pownall with Mike this morning. Its an easy hike and we did the boundary trail to add to the length. Nice view from summit and the clouds were forming before our eyes.

Rows

A photo of the keyboard on my Mom's piano, a Wurlitzer upright. Without a tripod it would be hard to get something less noisy but I kind of like the effect anyway.

Dave Rowe Trio

This is the Dave Rowe Trio (or at least Dave Rowe and the fiddler, the bassist is behind the tree). I saw them perform last night at the Gorham Summer Concert Series in the gazebo in front of the town offices. They are a folk band and were very good. Dave Rowe's father - the late Tom Rowe - was the front man for Schooner Fair and this trio performed a couple of his songs as well as their own material.

Twirl

Can you guess what these are? I shot this on the sidewalk outside a store on Commercial St in Portland's Old Port.

Chimes

A glass wind-chime on the porch of my aunt Bobby Lu's camp. I love the sound of these old chimes, but then I love the sound of the wind blowing through the pines as well.

Old and New

This is the monument Our Lady of Victories (erected in 1891) in the aptly named Monument Square in Portland backed by the new facade of the Portland Public Library.

Zipper Troubles

A sign in a window in Portland. I like this because the guy looks like a comic book villain (though it is because he is looking down at his zipper) and I like the spools of thread in the background. Taken while I was on the Scott Kelby 2010 Photo Walk.

Self Storage

This blue trailer has been on the side of Rt 202 for as long as I can recall. I'm surprised it doesn't look more deteriorated from all the years of sitting.

Moved Out Back

This sign on this run-down house caught my eye driving home from NH today. You couldn't see what "Out Back" referred to but I'd be willing to bet it was a trailer of some sort. I always used to be bothered by the poverty you see driving through Maine but photo-wise I find it rather interesting. This place is classic with the metal roof, icicle Christmas lights, and of course the sign directing would-be visitors to call out back instead of at the main dwelling.

Shade

In the shade of a tree at my parent's house with the hot sun in a cloudless sky glaring on the field beyond. Trees were one of things I missed most while I was in Arizona.

Supplies

A shot of one of the packed shelves in the store at Nason's Beach on Sebago. I think the thing that most caught my eye were the candy cigarettes. I'm surprised those still exist. This little densely packed store, bakery, and restaurant has pretty much everything you can imagine needing during a vacation. Not surprising given that it is directly beside an RV camp ground.

Sun & Clouds

This was shot from the back of my parent's boat on Sebago Lake as we were pulling into Nason's Beach for breakfast (two egg, open-faced breakfast sandwiches for $3.99!) Just the previous day I had seen an N.C. Wyeth painting of a Maine lobsterman hauling traps with similar square clouds. I like the way the clouds along the bottom edge can be seen to be dissipating.

Dial It In

I'd like to turn my own dials to rich and turn off the choke.

This is the front of a Johnson 3 horsepower outboard motor that my Dad found at a yard sale for $20. It has no neutral or reverse, just slow and fast. Also as you can see here you could change the fuel/air mixture for the run speeds.

Nets

This is a new installation at the Portland Museum of Art in the lobby. I'm sorry to say I don't remember the artist or the name of the piece and I can't seem to find it on the website. It is meant to represent nets and it was all sewn together. It is absolutely huge and hangs all the way from the ceiling to nearly touch the floor. This shot was actually taken from the 3rd floor balcony and shows only a portion of it but I wanted to get the light pattern on the floor. It actually makes the lobby much darker than it normally is but I think it is a very cool piece.

Flat Iron Building

This is a postcard of the famous Flat Iron Building in New York City. The card was never sent through the mail, the back is empty but in the writing area on the front it reads "Perhaps you may go to see this sometime." The Flat Iron Building was one of the first sky scrapers in New York.

The main reason I wanted to post this is because of the story of how it came to be in my possession. My first full day back from Phoenix I went to the Portland Museum of Art to see the American Moderns on Paper exhibit. One of the supporters of these artists during their careers was Alfred Stieglitz who was also a photographer and in fact made a well-known (though not as well-known as Edward Steichen's) photograph of the building. So when I returned home from the museum I was telling my Mom about this and brought up these two photgraphs of the building to show her. I had previously mentioned that I was interested in acquiring some old postcards to make shadow boxes from. A week or so later she went to a number of antique sales and happened across this postcard which she knew at once that I would like. And now here it is for you to see as well. As a photograph it isn't too impressive, but I do think the postcard content itself makes up for it.

Self Portrait

When I was getting ready to start a daily photo blog I read a post that said you should include a self-portrait every so often. Here I am reading in my parent's living room. This was processed using Camera Bag on the Mac with the Uber Vint combination of filters (Original > Lolo > Helga > Instant).

Snake plant in my Mom's garden. This is a shot I'd really like to have completely in focus but just not possible with my little camera and especially not without a tripod.

Just opened this morning in my Mom's garden. Hopefully they will hold up in the downpour.

A stretch of a rails-to-trails trail headed toward Westbrook. I was being pursued by a swarm of square-tailed flies and ended up turning back after less than a mile.

The French Press Eatery

My parents took me here this morning. They feature made-to-order doughnuts. Of course that doughnut nearly killed me, but it was neat anyway. In the future I'd just order breakfast.

A field and clouds, neither of which you often find in Arizona. I took this on a walk.

Going Home

Through the terminal window. I figured the first photo of my blog should include a shot of my return trip from Arizona to Maine. This was taken at JFK after my overnight 8-hour layover.
